Our services address factors that affect the health of the population of Jefferson County.
Public Health: Everyone's Responsibility
The local Board of Health develops policies based on local data to encourage a healthier community. If there is a public health emergency or potential threat, JCPH is the clearing house or the public health fire station - carrying 24 to 7 beepers, we are able to respond throughout the county.
Everyone is aware of personal health care, public health is a shared responsibility of governments and the private sector. Population health is a service to a group of individuals impacting the larger community, i.e., communicable diseases. Treating a person with E-coli bacteria is an example of personal health care services. Investigating the source of the exposure(s), monitoring, tracking and educating restaurants, grocery stores, and schools to stop the E-coli outbreak in a community and work to prevent further outbreaks is a public health intervention. We are part of a system; we work together with local doctors and the hospital.

The mission of JCPH is to protect the health of all Jefferson County residents by promoting safe, healthy communities and environments.
What is Public Health
JCPH works with county, state, and federal governments, non-profit organizations, and private sector partners to keep people from getting sick and to protect them from health threats. Your local health department assures the safety of the water we drink, the restaurant food we eat, and the air we breathe. Public Health responds to emerging health threats such as H1N1 influenza, provides services to prevent family violence, and offers preventive care.
