FEMA Funeral Assistance
- Recognizing that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought overwhelming grief to many families across the United States, our partners at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have committed to help ease some of the financial stress families have experienced in losing loved ones. Specifically, FEMA is providing financial assistance for COVID-19-related funeral expenses incurred after January 20, 2020.
Details:
- FEMA will begin accepting applications in early April – exact date TBD.
- FEMA is standing up a dedicated call-center with a new 800 number just for Funeral Assistance.
- No on-line registrations will be accepted.
- Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien who incurred funeral expenses after January 20, 2020. However, there is no requirement for the decedent to have been a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien.
- Tribal members may apply and receive assistance under the applicable state or territory declaration. No agreement between the tribal government and state or territory is required by FEMA in order for tribal members to receive assistance.
- The death must be attributed to COVID-19 in the state or territory in which the death occurred, as indicated on the death certificate.
- The death must have occurred in the United States, including the U.S. territories or the District of Columbia.
- Funeral assistance is intended to assist with expenses for funeral services and interment or cremation.
- Funeral expenses must be incurred by the applicant after January 20, 2020 and applicants must provide documentation demonstrating they incurred the expenses.
- Funeral Assistance awards cannot duplicate costs covered by another source (i.e., funeral or burial insurance, financial assistance from voluntary agencies, other applicable government programs/agencies, or other entities). The amount of any assistance received from another source will be deducted from the funeral assistance award.
- Funeral Assistance is limited to actual costs up to a maximum of $9,000 per COVID-19 related funeral and a total up to the maximum ONA award of $35,500 per registration (if someone applies for multiple funerals).
- Note – Any funds received by the applicant under the Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program also count towards an applicant’s total ONA maximum award of $35,500. FEMA will monitor this and coordinate with states to verify LWA payments in the event the max award may be reached.
- Funeral home directors, Coroners, and Medical Examiners across Washington have been notified.
